NEA and Geron - A Perfect Fit

Post by kmall » Thu Aug 20, 2020 10:26 am

As many of us know, one of the major investors from the most recent round of funding by Geron was NEA Ventures.

They specialize in backing ground breaking companies in Technology and Healthcare. Dr. Scott Gottlieb has returned as a "special partner" after a 2+ year stint as FDA Director.

Looking into them a little further I came across this video which focuses on rare diseases with Orphan Drug Designation.

It features David Mott "General Partner" and Ed Mathers "General Partner"

Here is a quote from the 11minute video with key interest in regards to their recent Geron investment:

"Big Pharma is not good at discovering and developing platform technologies. It's just a fact. If you look at most Big Pharma right now, a bulk of their pipelines is coming from external acquisitions or business development relationships. We understand the science to a level where we can manipulate the causes of the diseases instead of the symptoms, and fix them. Drugs are working. Big Pharma is NOT CAPTURING THE INNOVATION. We're doing it, and companies are increasingly keeping their products all the way through development and commercialization and building vertically integrated businesses. NEA has been really fortunate to be a part of this rare disease ecosystem. We've helped a tremendous number of patients, a tremendous number of entrepreneurs and all of our LP's through this practice." - David Mott - "General Partner"

Side note - Ed Mathers was with GSK for 15 years.....I have to wonder if he crossed paths with Sharon McBain during her 20 year stint there?.....a little food for thought.

These guys are bright, innovative and driven for succes. Looks like they teamed up with kindred spirits in Dr. Scarlett and Team Geron. Good things to come for patients and investors is my take. Thanks again to all of the past and present patients enrolled in the Imetelstat clinical trials. It's their sacrifice that makes any of this possible. Kmall
